Primary hyperparathyroidism – Is dietary calcium restriction indicated?

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Many patients and some physicians believe that dietary calcium (Ca) restriction is beneficial to patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. This is based on elevated serum calcium (Ca) levels, a typical finding in patients with the classical form of primary hyperparathyroidism. However, the abnormal parathyroid parenchyma maintains some responsiveness to fluctuations in the serum Ca levels to further increase PTH production. Therefore, a reduced dietary Ca intake can be perceived by the parathyroid parenchyma as a stimulus to increase parathormone synthesis and secretion. For these reasons, normal Ca dietary intake is recommended for the patients with primary hyperparathyroidism
